In response to: VoIP on the iPhone and iPod Touch - a comparative review

Thanks for the good review, i have 2 of the above mentioned products, one issue i have run in to wile attempting to use either is "sound! I am attempting to connect to my voip server with media 5 and accrobits wile both look good, I can't say much for he functionality. as 1 i am blind and 2 i require the voice over feature. media 5 operates well, in program with voice over howeverin call my voice cuts out, and the call starts to lag behind. now for accrobits, I can't use voiceover at all, as the dial-pad will not activate, and in call the playback test call does not send back my audio. out of the too, i have to say, if the issue with voice overis fixed, I would be inlined to use accrobits, soft phoneif on the other hand, i could se improved connectivity with media5 - phone then i would continue to use that as well. Quick note... both apps were also tested with voice over off, and accrobits passed withflying colours!. good call quality over all. and no complaints from the other party. note for developers though please alw for voice over interoperability! it saves me from accidentally hanging up on someone unexpectedily.

Hi Travis,

I completely agree with you that if you have a lossy compression scheme, MOS=5 can not be achieved. My bad for not being clearer.

What I probably meant to say is NOT that SILK as the time being is able to perform MOS=5 - but will probably reach MOS=5 in the future - faster than other wide band codecs.

What is true today, based on published data from Skype, is that SILK reaches MOS=4.49 faster than other wide band codecs. I have now amended the article to better suit the current state of things.

Thank you for pointing this error out to me, much appreciated.

Nothing on VoIP with compression can reach MOS 5, on VoIP telephony, why? because of bandwidth and money and voice band issues, are you kidding? if you classify SILK as 5, what is the classification of your voice media on Media Players such as MP3 and even raw quality, compression in this context means ignoring much details as it sound good or fair to the listener, by definition you are cutting out details, this is why Voice band is used, so how come you got this idea of MOS 5? and you call this professional idea?

Many thanks for the comprehensive review. Apart from simple SIP URI dialing what I am looking for is a specific VoIP client for iPhone/iTouch that will allow me to *directly* dial an IP address and a SIP URI address like below:

(e.g. sip:user@myip.dyndns.org:5061)

I don't want to use a voice provider, I would like to do this directly and the sip client need able to make call without register. In Windows, X-Lite can do this.

@Rob R - the speed of your GPRS / EDGE connection will limit if you can use Skype or not. However, the speed of your connection is not the real culprit here. What is the real culprit is the latency in your GPRS network - which can be too high for Voice over IP (i.e. Skype).

Thirdly - if you have provider that will block VoIP traffic in their network, Skype may, or may no, work for you. In certain parts of the world, the culture among network operators is block any attempt of voice traffic on the data part of their network.

I tried it - it works great on my WiFi connection. The sound is rich and clear and there is no annoying delay like with Fring. Great application - this is what I had been really hoping and waiting for!

Will it work on a WiFi connection? That is what I am mostly interested in.
My carrier only has GPRS & EDGE; will it work on that?

@elboyero - the version number on the Nokia version does NOT follow the version numbers on any of the desk top clients (Windows or Macintosh). The feature set is not the same on the desk top and the mobile (i.e. you will not have access to video-calls on the Nokia version) - so having the same version numbers would not be the right thing to do. Even on the desk top clients (Win/Mac) does not follow each other.

The production version of the Nokia client is 1.0.0.2.

As with most well behaving Nokia Symbian software, the upgrade will be replacing your existing version - no need to uninstall anything.

Based your version number, my guess it that you are talking about one of the desk top clients. You should consult either the Skype on-line help - or even better, ask a computer savvy friend to help you out.

I would say your estimation is pretty accurate! I am expecting the IP-2G4B without modules to be priced around $450,-, the 4 port BRI module will clock in at around $160,- and the GSM modules will probably cost around $190-$210 each. But we will of course run a 4 week promo when we are ready to start shipping it out.

We are expecting to receive the first unit in less than 2 weeks, I'll bring it to your office and let you play with it for a couple of days as soon as it arrives ;o)

I am expecting that it will be available from our web shop 2-4 weeks after the arrival of the first unit, we want to test it properly before we release it publicly.

Nice review thanks! We tested Skype beta on three E71s during the past month and we're pretty satisfied. The native Symbian client is far better than the Java version. Will install the production version as soon as possible.

The proxy like is not optimistic. What I really would like to see who can provide better quality within their own network.

Of course if Skype provided Nimbuzz Calls, it would be slightly worst than Nimbuzz itself indeed.

I love the fact I can use Nimbuzz for multiple SIP/Nimbuzz Calls, without any proxy like thing.

@Thiago that is really a good idea, and I'll see if I have the time doing this. Actually, I'll have to see if any of my Nokia-touting friends have time to be involved in such a test.

My primary reason of avoiding Skype-proxies like Nimuzz is mostly from a security point of view - not functionally or ease of use. I can however clearly see where you are coming from wanting to use only one client like Nimbuzz on your cell phone.

I'd love to see a Nimbuzz-to-Nimbuzz Call compared with a Skype-to-Skype Call on Symbian.

Also details like battery consumption, portability, all in one etc...

I still prefer Nimbuzz freedom of choice due the SIP, Skype and Nimbuzz Calls all in one, for the same battery cost :)
