Skype founders to reclaim Skype from eBay

Skype LogoIs the real reason behind the court case between Joltid and eBay why Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis now state that they want to buy back Skype from eBay?

According to The New York Times this is exactly what the founders of Skype now want.

A very interesting fact is that Joltid was in fact founded by Zennström and Friis. I have not had the time to check the facts, but according to various rumors floating around on the Internet, Joltid is still owned by Zennström and Friis.

Lately, several people have asked if eBay was completely out of their mind buying Skype for USD 3.1 billion without getting exclusive rights to the underlying Peer-To-Peer technology.

If one follow what is happening around Skype, it has been known for quite some time that eBay is willing to sell Skype for the right price. It seems eBay finally have gotten on better thoughts and is admitting that the Skype platform has not brought eBay the right synergies they expected some years ago.

If we play around with the thought that Zennström and Friis really are playing hard by first going into a court case on license issues and then trying to raise enough money to give ebay the right offer, this could be pretty cool. On the other hand, if Friis & Zennström play hard with one of the biggest players on the Internet - how hard will they play against the various players in the Ecosystem.

Hopefully they recognize that the Ecosystem is a good thing for the long view of the Skype platform.

In my first posting about the court case I mused over the uncertainties with regards to the Ecosystem around Skype due to this court case. With the last bit of information the Ecosystem around Skype can breathe a little bit more easy for the time being.
